πŸ“Œ BIG NEWS

Google's Big AI Move is a 'Universal Speech Model'

Google's all in on their Universal Speech Model (USM).

The USM is a family of speech models that can handle over 300 languages, all thanks to the magic of machine learning.

This model is part of Google's 1,000 Languages Initiative, which aims to support the world's most spoken languages.

With 2 billion parameters and 12 million hours of speech, USM can recognize and translate under-resourced languages.

Google is already using USM for closed captioning on YouTube, with a word error rate of less than 30% for 73 languages.

Pretty cool stuff. And it has to be because this is Google’s big gambit to rival OpenAI.
