ChatGPT is banned in Italy

OpenAI has found itself in hot water with the Italian data protection authority, the Garante. As a result, they’ve geoblocked access to their generative AI chatbot, ChatGPT, in Italy.

The Garante has ordered OpenAI to stop processing Italians’ data for the ChatGPT service, citing concerns over breaches of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Ouch.

OpenAI has responded by disabling access to users in Italy and issuing refunds to ChatGPT Plus subscribers. They’ve even temporarily paused subscription renewals to avoid charging users while the service is suspended.

But this might not be enough to appease the Garante, who have opened an investigation into ChatGPT. They’re concerned that OpenAI has unlawfully processed Italians’ data without proper transparency or age verification measures.

It seems like OpenAI has some serious compliance issues to address, and they may not be able to avoid the penalties that come with GDPR breaches.
