Biden, Gates speak up on AI dev pause

US President Joe Biden and tech mogul Bill Gates have weighed in on the recent debate over pausing AI advancements, with Biden emphasizing the need for safe use and Gates stressing the importance of focusing on how AI can be used to address global issues.

Speaking at the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) meeting, Biden emphasized that while AI offers solutions, tech companies must ensure that AI products are safe for public use. 

This follows the rise of easy-to-use AI tools that generate manipulative content and deepfakes that have raised ethical and societal concerns. 

Biden has also urged Congress to pass bipartisan privacy legislation to limit personal data collected by tech companies.

Meanwhile, Gates expressed support for AI, stating that identifying the tricky areas of AI is critical for its safe use. 

Gates believes that the benefits of AI outweigh the risks and that focusing on the best way to use AI is more effective than a global pause.
